“Working with Karen has always been enjoyable and mind-easing, not only because she is highly competent and capable, but also because she is a natural problem solver, who is forward-thinking and meticulous in her attention to detail…..I had the pleasure of working particularly closely with Karen during my year as graduate chair, which allowed me to witness Karen’s highly organized, multi-tasking managerial skills. As someone new to the position, I relied on Karen as my first point of contact for various issues and questions about university policies, procedures, and bureaucratic processes. She was always patient with my requests and questions, providing detailed and thoughtful guidance to the best of her knowledge. There was also no shortage of compliments from students about Karen as well….What I most appreciate about Karen is her work ethic. She never saw herself in a passive supporting role; rather, she treated the manager position seriously with a genuine sense of responsibility, even though it was temporary. She would always think and act proactively, seeking solutions in the best interest of students, faculty, and the program as a whole. With Karen, you consistently receive more and better than what you asked for.”

I have known Karen since 2019 and worked with her in various capacities. Working with Karen has always been enjoyable and mind-easing, not only because she is highly competent and capable, but also because she is a natural problem solver, who is forward-thinking and meticulous in her attention to detail.

I first worked with Karen as a colleague at the SFU Urban Studies Program. As the manager of a short-staffed unit serving a large student body, Karen successfully juggled numerous roles, providing critical administrative support to the director, graduate chair and faculty, supervising part-time staff, and advising existing and prospective graduate students on course selection and academic planning. As our event planner, Karen also contributed a lot to building and strengthening the sense of community of the program.

I also worked with Karen on several research projects later on, where she provided proofreading and copy-editing services. As always, she was responsive, reliable and consistent in her high-quality work. What sets Karen apart is her ability to read the various needs of different projects, e.g. knowing when light-touch proofreading is sufficient and when more substantive editing is required, and calibrate her approach to provide services and support that are precisely needed. I can say, without hesitation, she is one of the best copy editors I have ever worked with.

Beyond her professional excellence, Karen is also kind, warm, and very collegial to work with! I recommend her wholeheartedly.
