The member of parliament at this time was Denise Savoie.

Communications Responsibilities

  • pitching stories to local media about the MP’s work and achievements
  • serving as her contact for local media
  • researching, writing and editing items for the MP’s newsletter
  • writing news releases about the MP’s work and initiatives

Outreach Responsibilities

  • managing the MP’s calendar when she was at home in her constituency, so as to maximize opportunities to meet and connect with her constituents
  • accompanying the MP to community events and providing practical and administrative support for her outreach work
meeting with local interest groups and community leaders when the MP was not available
  • organizing town halls, film screenings, and other events initiated by the MP to advance her critic portfolios (housing, childcare and post-secondary education) or personal priorities related to environmental protection and climate change

Other Responsibilities

  • The nature of the work and the small number of staff (4 in total) in her local and Ottawa offices meant that we all had to work closely to keep her offices running smoothly while dealing with a high volume of requests (phone calls, emails and walk-ins) for the MP’s help and attention.
  • This required a high levels of flexibility, diplomacy, empathy, and good judgement, as well as the willingness to pitch in to duties outside my strict job description as and when needed.
