Hazard Alerts, WorkSafeBC, 2011-2013

My roles: I wrote approximately 12 of these one-page alerts and safety bulletins while working at WorkSafeBC as a technical editor in its investigations division (in addition to my other writing and editing responsibilities). These publications were based on detailed and lengthy incident reports produced by WorkSafe BC’s incident investigators and report editors.

Each of these alerts or bulletins had to be approved by an engineer and lawyer who worked for WorkSafeBC before it could be published and distributed to employers. Obtaining these approvals required me to collaborate and negotiate with all the involved subject matter experts. I also worked with the incident investigator and the in-house graphic designer to conceive and obtain approval for the illustration that was included in each alert. These negotiations were sometimes challenging because of the many considerations involved, such as the need to provide clear, concise and accurate preventative information to employers and workers, the desire to be sensitive to the impacts of each publication on accident survivors, and WorkSafeBC’s role as a regulator. See pdf version here.
